Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon)

Exposure

  • Heating of Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE/Teflon): generates toxic inhalational compounds
    • While these can be toxic to humans, they are especially toxic to birds

Clinical Presentations

  • Polymer Fume Fever (see Polymer Fume Fever, [[Polymer Fume Fever]])
    • Occurs with exposure to fumes generated from PTFE heated at lower temperatures
  • Acute Lung Injury-ARDS (see Acute Lung Injury-ARDS, [[Acute Lung Injury-ARDS]])
    • Occurs with exposure to fumes generated from PTFE heated at higher temperatures (generally >450 degrees F)
