Airway Foreign Body

Epidemiology

  • Major cause of death in children (2000 deaths per year annually in USA)

Physiology

  • Foreign body lodged in trachea or bronchus (usually right mainstem bronchus)

Clinical

  • Cough (see Cough, [[Cough]])
  • Tracheobronchial Obstruction (see Obstructive Lung Disease, [[Obstructive Lung Disease]])
    • Diagnosis
      • FOB: indicated urgently to rule out foreign body if suspected
    • Clinical
      • Dyspnea
      • Wheezing: may be localized over area of obstruction
  • Hemoptysis (see Hemoptysis, [[Hemoptysis]])
  • Post-Obstructive Atelectasis/Pneumonia/Bronchiectasis (see Atelectasis, [[Atelectasis]], Pneumonia, [[Pneumonia]], and Bronchiectasis, [[Bronchiectasis]])

Treatment

  • Bronchoscopic removal
  • Rigid bronchoscopic removal
  • Surgical removal
