Epidemiology

  • Topical Antibiotic Used in Burn Patients to Prevent Bacterial Colonization Prior to Skin Grafting (see Burns, [[Burns]])
    • Mafenide is Rapidly Absorbed Systemically

Pharmacology

  • Sulfonamide Antibiotic with Carbonic Anhydrase Inhibition Properties (see Sulfonamides, [[Sulfonamides]]): some of its metabolites also have carbonic anhydrase inhibition properties
    • Renal Bicarbonate Loss: bicarbonate is replaced by chloride (produces hyperchloremia)
