  • Interference with NMJ transmission
  • Hypoventilation leads to hypoxia/acidosis

Side Effects

  • Aminoglycoside-Related Neuromuscular Toxicity: resembles Botulism
    • Predisposing Factors
      • Myasthenia Gravis
      • ARF/CRF
    • Diagnosis
      • PFT’s: restriction
      • CXR: low lung volumes
    • Symptoms: diplopia, dysphagia, dyspnea, dysarthria
  • Acute Kidney Injury with ATN (see Acute Kidney Injury):

Treatment

  • Discontinue drug: recovery within hours-days
  • Anticholinesterase agents: useful for aminoglycoside neuromuscular toxicity
