Bromocriptine (Parlodel, Cycloset, Brotin)

Pharmacology

  • These drugs are structurally similar (producing similar pulmonary toxicity)
    • Bromocriptine: used to treat Parkinson’s disease
    • Cabergoline (see Cabergoline): used to treat Parkinson’s disease
    • Methysergide (see Methysergide): previously used to treat vascular headaches

Adverse Effects

  • Pleural Effusion (see Pleural Effusion-Exudate)
    • Diagnosis
      • CXR/Chest CT: pleural thickening
      • Pleural Fluid: lymphocytosis
    • Clinical: painless and rarely large
    • Treatment: discontinue medication -> effusion resolves
