Yersinia Enterocolitica Contaminated PRBC Transfusion

Epidemiology

  • Occurs due to transfusion of PRBC contaminated with Yersinia Enterocolitica
  • Donors of contaminated blood usually had GI illness

Physiology

  • Febrile reaction to Y. Enterocolitica (which may grow at 4°C during blood storage)
  • No hemolyis occurs

Clinical Presentations

  • Fever (see [[Fever]]): occurs >1 hr after transfusion is completed

Treatment

  • Prevention: screening of donors for GI illnesses
